Rooms usually cost $115 for the first night, with a reducing rate for each night stayed. The rooms are traditional, sparkling clean, and quiet.
Your Heritage accommodation includes;
use of the guest lounge room, all-day self-serve tea & coffee, a light self-serve breakfast (including plunger coffee, fresh fruit, cereal, toast etc.). Cooked breakfasts may be purchased if pre-ordered.
You may also dine-in at the traditional Black Swan Restaurant. The menu includes high quality Tasmanian produce. We usually use our own organically grown raspberries and herbs, as well as other local fruit, vegetables, and free-range organic eggs & meats.
Cygnet Hotel & Guest House is a unique, award-winning, Heritage-Listed holiday destination offering accommodation in simple but stylishly refurbished guest rooms. There are no en-suites. The bathrooms are plentiful and conveniently located just a few metres down the hallway from the guest bedrooms.
Our peaceful piano-lounge Wine-Bar & Café has a range of local wines, beers, espresso coffee, cake and snacks. You may enjoy weekend performances by local acoustic musicians playing their own songs and other folk, jazz, and blues melodies. We always have music on Friday nights.
Our facilities are publicly available during summer, and provided year-round for pre-booked reservations and our accommodation guests.

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY

Situated in the Huon Valley, the rural village of Cygnet is only 55km / 50 minutes from Hobart and is centrally positioned for day trips to various Southern Tasmanian tourist attractions. Cygnet is surrounded by rolling hills and delightful waterways and is ideal for picnics, fishing, bush-walking, boating and has some beautiful scenic drives. A public boat ramp is located near the Port Cygnet Sailing Club which runs regular regattas. Nearby is a wildlife sanctuary area providing a haven for water-birds. There is a local History Museum, several heritage listed buildings, and a variety of accommodation.
The region is renowned for its quality agricultural produce with Cygnets’ cafés and restaurants also having a great reputation with good-food-lovers. The eclectic mix of creative residents is reflected in the array and variety of art & craft studios and galleries scattered throughout the charming country village. Cygnet Hotel & Guest House displays some local art & craft and provides a venue for art workshops and demonstrations. By appointment, guests can engage in various art activities eg. clay sculpting, pottery or painting. The annual Cygnet Folk Music Festival is an internationally recognised event held in January. Musicians and poets of the local Cygnet Folk Group, and other music groups, also meet regularly throughout the year at various locations. Visitors are welcome to join in the regular sessions held at the Cygnet Hotel & Guest House, and participation is appreciated.
The Cygnet Hotel was purchased Helen Jackson and John Bremner in 2007. They continue to restore the building to its former elegance while providing visitors to the region a wonderful holiday destination. It’s a little quaint, but the charming Cygnet Hotel and Guest House was nationally recognised in 2009 as the “Best Place to Stay” for good old fashioned hotel accommodation.

HISTORY

“…Cygnet has a history older than the founding of Melbourne, and of the settlements of South Australia and Queensland.” (Cygnet - A Brief History - by Jean Cockerill )
“The first mention of the Huon area of Tasmania, or Van Diemen's Land, was made in 1788 when Captain Cook landed at Adventure Bay on Bruny Island.
Eleven years later, Lieutenant Bligh in the Bounty visited Adventure Bay and planted some apple trees - the beginning of an industry
In 1793 Bruni D'Entrecasteaux visited the area and named Kermandie (ec), Esperance Bay and Recherche Bay after his two ships, D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Port du Cygne (place of swans).
In 1802 Commodore Baudin visited Port Cygnet and named the Fleurieu River (later Anges Rivulet). One of his party, Peron, wrote of meeting a beautiful young aboriginal girl - Oura Oura - and her family…”
The first European settler in the district was William Nichols who arrived in 1834. The town was named Lovett in 1862 and there were more than six hotels in the locality, three of which were in the township of Lovett.
The building of the Imperial Hotel (now Cygnet Hotel) began in 1907 and was completed in 1910. The town was renamed Cygnet in 1915 and became the first district to buy bulk power from the Hydro in 1924. The Imperial Hotel was the first building in the district to have electricity.
By the 1930s Cygnet was the central fruit growing region and hotels were often the meeting places for social and business gatherings. In 1948 the Imperial Hotel was sold and to group and operated by a committee. It was renamed the Cygnet Community Hotel. Many of today’s older locals remember going to formal events and dances that were held there. The hotel was sold on in 1975 and was renamed the Cygnet Hotel. It operated as a local pub and had a succession of owners. It was known locally as The Top Pub. Then for a while it became known as The Art Hotel. Because of its historic heritage significance, Cygnet Hotel & Guest House is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.

There are several art and craft galleries in Cygnet. Workshops in clay sculpting and ceramics are occasionally held in Helen's Studio at the Cygnet Art Hotel. Painting instruction is also available. Expressions of interest in participating are most welcome. We also have some pieces of locally made art and craft for sale.

Bushwalking & wilderness

The walk to Pelverata Falls is not far away. From Cygnet Art Hotel it is only a short drive to Tasmanian Forestry's Tahune Airwalk and to the National Park's Hartz Mountains.

Several cafes and a renowned restaurant, the Red Velvet Lounge, are only a short stroll down the street. However, once they arrive at Cygnet Art Hotel, some guests prefer to stay in of an evening. Given the comfortable atmosphere in the piano & wine Bar and the quality of food and service of the Black Swan Restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights, there is really no need to go out. We can also provide dinner for our house guests on the other evenings.
A self-serve continental breakfast is provided any time up to 10am and includes plunger coffee. Cooked breakfast is available at a small cost if ordered the previous day.
Picnic lunches should be requested at the time of booking.

Fishing

There are quite a few fishing spots in Port Cygnet and the Huon River, which are nearby. Your hosts recently went fly-fishing in the highland lakes of central Tasmania, and can refer you to accommodation and a guide.

On the walls of the Cygnet Art Hotel you will find some paintings by a few local artists. There are also at least a couple of sculpted clay portraits in the wine bar, created by your host, Helen, who is a ceramic artist. Your host, John, has carpentry amonst his various professions. He likes to create small timber boxes with drawers, some of which are availble for viewing.
There are several art galleries nearby and the local history museum is in the main village area, just a short stroll down the street.

As well as the charming piano-wine Bar, the Cygnet Art Hotel has an auditorium area that can seat 100 people for a sit down dinner. Food service is provided using the expertise of our Black Swan Restaurant staff.
Catholic and Anglican Churches are located nearby and there is a local celebrant. Up to 33 people can be accommodated in our 15 guest rooms. We can also arrange for more people to be suitably accommodated at other guest houses in the local area.

We stock a good range of Tasmanian wines. Our closest wineries are the Hartview Vineyard and the Panorama Winery, with several others not much further afield.

Throughout winter the Cygnet Folk Music Group meet at Cygnet Art Hotel on the first Friday of each month. They welcome visitors to enjoy the evening entertainment provided, and to participate should the mood take you.
You may also be entertained on the last Friday of each month, when our local jazz musicians get together. Our music meetings finish early, so you will always enjoy a peaceful sleep.
Dinner can be enjoyed by the open fire in the Black Swan Restaurant, or you can huddle beside the fir in the guest lounge-room.
