The Belar c1898

On 6th January 1897 came the opportunity to take up land and in early 1898 CA Wright settled on 2,560 acres. The acreage he took up was part of the Terramungamine - Burroway stations. Because of the many Belah trees situated on the site where he built his house and on the rest of the property he named the property "The Belars".
In order to take up this property it was necessary under the prevailing regulations to live on the property for 7 years and to show improvements. Land was cleared with help from the local immigrants an appreciated supply of labour at the turn of the century.
Charles built the kitchen and what is now called the Kurrajong room first by using small trees stripped of all branches. Before Charles moved Hannah & the younger children to the new property a house needed to be built.
The first part of the house consisted of a piano/sitting room and three bedrooms.
Building prooducts consisted of brush mud pise and bricks made in their own homemade kiln on the property. The bricks were made by Mr Bill Hayden and the site of the kiln is still distinguishable on the ground.
All ceilings have natural wood milled from the property and have been untouched for over 80 years. The living area was built at a small distance from the kitchen area. An essential procedure due to ashes falling out and burning down several houses while occupants were still asleep.
Eventually they built a massive lounge room to join the two together. The walls are 13 feet from the floor and then slope into the final height of 15 feet to a beautiful polished ceiling of local pine. This room was many times a venue for the locals to gather for a night of dance and social talk. The neighbours would arrive by foot or horse and sulky in the afternoon, enjoy the night and dance to all hours and then walk the long distance home the next morning.
The family Pianola was located in the sitting room and played constantly with locals dancing and enjoying themselves in the large lounge room next door. To be continued.
