Locality

The Alpine Walking Track starts right here in Walhalla and goes all the way to Canberra! (650 km to ACT). You can do the first section and walk the 6 kilometres to Thomson Station, then take the train back to Walhalla.
Shorter and easier walks are numerous around the area, but one not to miss is along the old tram track halfway up the hill which gives you breathtaking views of the town.

If you are still keen another well known trek is up to the Cricket Ground. It begins opposite Spetts Cottage and is 45 minute walk up a steep hill, but well worth it. The oval and cricket pitch was carved out of the top of the hill, done because there was insufficient flat land to make one down in the Valley.

Wander along Stringers Creek, or take the more energetic track to old Maidentown and hunt for relics from last century. Take the train to Thomson Station and do the 5 kilometre return walk which ends up skirting the town on the old tramway line. Get out your bikes and ride the Rail Trail from Thomson Station to Erica.

There's plenty of wildlife to see such as wallabies, kookaburras, lyrebirds and black cockatoos, not to mention snakes so do take care. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and beautiful vegetation including tree ferns, mountain ash and native orchids.

Skiing
In Winter you can take a short trip to Mt St Gwinear and enjoy some cross country skiing, tobogganing or just sightseeing snow. Alternatively, for some real skiing take the newly opened South Face Road to the Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort and be on the ski slopes in just one hour.

Fishing

There is great fishing to be done in the upper reaches of the nearby Thomson River, while enjoying the region's beauty and solitude. Fly fishing for trout will challenge the most ardent angler.

Property

Stringer's Cottage is named after Edward "Ned" Stringer. He was one of a group of prospectors who had been exploring in creeks flowing into the Thomson River valley and found gold sometime during late December 1862 or early January 1863. A claim was pegged out and former convict Edward Randel, registered the claim at the outpost town on Bald Hills on 12 January under his assumed name, Edward "Ned" Stringer. Although he was presented with a monetary reward of £100 for his discovery, Stringer was unable to capitalise on his finds, dying in September 1863. Although the settlement was soon rechristened Walhalla after an early mine, the creek running through town still bears his name, as does the gorge and our quaint cottage which overlooks it all.
Try your hand at gold panning or fishing in the creek below or take the train to Thompson River Station and back. There are lots of bushwalks to do and things to see in Walhalla, or you can just sit and watch the world go by from the verandah. Please note, the cottage is located at the bottom of a steep staircase, so pack light and mind your step!

100 years ago Walhalla was a booming gold mining town and in its heyday, the third biggest town in Victoria. Where once there were 40 shops, 15 hotels, 4 churches and a population of almost 3000, Walhalla now has a permanent population of just 12. However, it is a unique historic village with plenty to see and do and still boasts 2 pubs and several shops. Tour the original gold mine, wander the main street and admire the architecture, or visit the hillside cemetery, one of the most fascinating and unusual in all of Victoria. Perched on the side of a steep hillside, there are more than 1,100 graves which tell a story of a struggle against hardship and adversity. For a journey into the past, take a trip aboard the Walhalla Goldfields Railway as it makes its way past vertical cliff faces and narrow cuttings, with some of the sharpest curves of any railway constructed in Victoria.
